Creativity in Counseling

Creativity in Counseling was an elective that I chose to take out of the 6 credits of electives that I needed. This was such a worthwhile and fulfilling class. This class explores different creative techniques that can be used in counseling sessions.

Some examples of activities that we participated in, as well as get the information of how to use these in sessions: sand trays, meditation, card games, team building exercises, and much more. These techniques that were learned are something that can be integrated when working in a school system when dealing with clients that might not be as open to talking.

This is something that is absolutely vital when working in school settings in order to make them feel more comfortable.  The most important artifact I got out of this class was a “creative box” In this box it is full of objects like crayons, play-doh, paint, paper, string, balloons, and many other miscellaneous creative items. In this box you are opening up a window to allow students and clients to be creative and express themselves in a way that might not be possible through words at this point in time. This is something that I will absolutely make sure that my office is always stocked with that assures that the clients always have access to the tools they need to be most productive in their sessions.
